Family & Children HealthHealthy Kids › Exercise After Vaccination: Reminders To Keep Yourself Safe

A lot of people avoid getting vaccinations for the fear of contracting any side effects. While it is true that some forms of vaccination can affect your normal health, the side effects are largely transitory and last for merely 1-2 days. Off late, there has been a lot of debate about the possible dangers of working out post vaccination. Most of us would imagine that physical activity will be detrimental to the well-being of a personal who has received a flu shot. After all, a person's immunity is already on the lower side immediately after a shot.

However, studies have shown that moderate exercise actually boosts immunity after a round of vaccination. A study conducted by scientists at the University of Illinois demonstrated that mice who ran leisurely for about half an hour after vaccination showed maximum resistance to any side effects of the flu shot. On the other hand, the mice which were sedentary and the ones who indulged in extreme exercises succumbed to the side effects. Therefore, 'moderate' is the crucial term when in it comes to working out after vaccination. Here are a few tips for anyone who wants to exercise after getting a vaccination shot:

1. Don't push yourself. It is important to consider the condition of your body at that particular time. When you receive a vaccination shot, your body is very vulnerable to all forms of diseases. Even fatigue or excessive physical stress could turn out to be serious in such circumstances. Therefore, you must modify your routine accordingly, reducing both the duration and the intensity of the workout session.

2. Our bodies react to vaccination shots in a variety of ways. Some of us are intrinsically stronger than others and hence, a shot might affect you more than others or vice versa. If you are already feeling exhausted and tired, you must avoid working out at all. This is not an indication of your weakness, it is just your body's way of reacting to vaccination.

3. During the workout, bandage the site of vaccination. At times, excessive exposure might lead to bleeding or other forms of physical injury. At any time during the workout session, if you experience any physical discomfort around the vaccination site, stop immediately.

4. Keep yourself hydrated throughout the session. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of passing out while exercising. It is harmful enough under normal circumstances but it can be worse when your body is weaker.

Finally, always consult your doctor about this issue. Medical advice can vary according to the kind of vaccine. For instance, the side effects or a normal flu vaccine can vary significantly from a swine flu vaccine. As an aside, also ask your doctor about getting discount vaccines. This might come as a surprise to you, but, you can get discount vaccines at several pharmacies or over the internet.
